Roots of Empathy in Prince Edward Island |
|
Roots of Empathy teaches the world to have no war.”
- Grade Four student in P.E.I.
Prince Edward Island was one of the first provinces in Canada to offer the Roots of Empathy program. It began in the fall of 2000 in nine classrooms across the province. To date Roots of Empathy has reached more than 3,175 children across the province.
Over the last decade, about 125 babies with the Roots of Empathy program have been the youngest teachers in P.E.I classrooms. A similar number of volunteer parents have learned more about their babies and the key role they play in a child's development. Dozens of P.E.I classroom teachers have learned about their students' emotional lives and witnessed first-hand the power of helping children to develop social and emotional literacy. P.E.I. programs have been supported by the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
In Prince Edward Island, the program is delivered in English and French, and in urban, rural, remote and Aboriginal communities. There is currently one program running in the First Nations community of Lennox Island and one program running in Mt. Stewart, which has a high Mi’kmaq population.
In 2010-11, there are 6 programs underway in 6 schools in two school districts.
