Roots of Empathy in the Republic of Ireland

 

Launched in 2010-2011, over 3,000 Irish children have since participated in a Roots of Empathy program.

  • In February 2013, Mary Gordon spoke at the Irish Embassy in Washington, DC, about Roots of Empathy’s contributions to building empathy among Irish students.

 

  • In March 2012, Mary Gordon was the featured speaker representing 50 internationally-renowned social innovators at Change Nation. See details of her participation at the event here.

 

  • 100% of Irish teachers with Roots of Empathy in their classrooms strongly agreed or agreed that as a result of the program, students showed more prosocial behaviour (e.g. sharing, helping, cooperating) by the end of the school year.

  • 100% of teachers in Ireland with Roots of Empathy in their classrooms strongly agreed or agreed that as a result of the program, pupils are more empathic to one another.

  • On January 22, 2013, Mary Gordon was featured in an interview with Newstalk’s Sean Moncrieff. Gordon addressed the impact of Roots of Empathy programs in reducing aggression in Irish classrooms, and the program’s potential to break intergenerational cycles of sectarian violence.
