Roots of Empathy in the United States Print

Roots of Empathy can teach the world that it’s not okay to hurt someone. Everyone is special and they should be treated kindly. Just because someone is doing something bad doesn't mean you have to do the same thing just to act cool. Someone can be different than you... Don't judge them.”

In 2007, Roots of Empathy came to the USA. The launch in the Seattle area of Washington state was made possible through the generous support of the John and Nancy Sabol Foundation and the Kirlin Charitable Foundation.

Roots of Empathy, initially offered in six schools, is now in its fourth year here and has grown to nearly 50 programs. The program is offered in conjunction with the lead agency, the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD).

If you are in the Puget Sound/Seattle area and would like to find out more about Roots of Empathy, including information about volunteering as a Roots of Empathy family or how to bring Roots of Empathy to your school or community, please contact program manager Linda Filley Bentler at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If you are outside Washington state, please do not contact PSESD, but refer instead to the Expansion section of our website or the information provided in the Contact Us section.

For feedback from Seattle, Washington students and teachers participating in Roots of Empathy please read the 2009-10 Seattle feedback Report.

All inquiries about expansion to new areas in the United States, or around the world, are coordinated through the International Office in Toronto, Canada. Please see the Expansion section of our website for information about how we grow.
